Whooping Cough

Protect yourself and those you love with timely advice and vaccination. Learn symptoms, prevention and when to seek care.
Pyramid Pharmacy - Helping the local community in Ashford, Beaconsfield, Bedford, Buckinghamshire, Guildford, Ilford, London, Tring, Watford and beyond.

Key Points

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is caused by Bordetella pertussis and is especially dangerous for young infants who are not fully immunised. It begins with cold-like symptoms and progresses to severe, prolonged coughing attacks that can lead to vomiting, exhaustion and breathing difficulty. Adults and older children may experience milder illness but can transmit the bacterium to vulnerable people. Immunisation is the primary prevention; boosters are recommended for pregnant women and close contacts. Early recognition and prompt advice help reduce transmission, and antibiotics can be effective if started early.

Symptoms and Course

Symptoms typically start with a runny nose, low-grade fever and mild cough for one to two weeks, followed by severe coughing episodes. Coughing fits can be followed by a high-pitched 'whoop' sound when breathing in, especially in infants. The illness can last many weeks and cause complications such as pneumonia, weight loss, or rib fractures from violent coughing. Pregnant women should be vaccinated in the third trimester to pass protective antibodies to their baby. If you suspect pertussis in yourself or a contact, seek advice promptly—early treatment and isolation reduce spread.

Vaccination and Protection

Vaccination is the cornerstone of preventing pertussis. Infants receive primary immunisations in early childhood, while adolescents and adults may need booster doses because immunity decreases over time. Pregnant women are advised to have a booster in the third trimester to transfer antibodies and protect newborns during their most vulnerable early weeks. Household contacts and carers should ensure they are up to date to create a protective cocoon around infants. If exposed, antibiotics may be recommended for close contacts to prevent illness. We provide clear scheduling advice and administer vaccines according to national guidance.

Consultation and Follow-up

When you visit for whooping cough advice or vaccination, we review your immunisation history, assess current symptoms and offer the appropriate vaccine or referral. For pregnant patients we coordinate timing to maximise newborn protection. If there has been a recent exposure, we will advise on post-exposure antibiotics for at-risk contacts. Our team explains side effects, provides written information and arranges follow-up if needed. Short appointments make it easy to access timely care and reduce the risk to infants and other vulnerable people in your household.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about pertussis, its prevention and what to do if exposed.
What causes whooping cough?
Whooping cough is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, which infects the respiratory tract and spreads easily by airborne droplets.
Who should get vaccinated?
Pregnant women, infants, children and close contacts of newborns should be prioritised; boosters are recommended for adolescents and adults per guidelines.
Are there side effects from the vaccine?
Common side effects are mild and include soreness at the injection site, low fever or irritability; serious reactions are rare.
What should I do if exposed?
Seek prompt medical advice; close contacts may be offered antibiotics and vaccination depending on age, pregnancy status and immunisation history.
Can adults get severe disease?
Adults can have prolonged coughing and may transmit infection to infants who are at higher risk of severe complications.
